Salisbury Playhouse wins Most Welcoming Theatre in the south west region
Salisbury Playhouse is delighted to have won the south west title UK's Most Welcoming Theatre 2016 in association with Smooth Radio.
The 12 regional winners have been invited to the UK Theatre Awards ceremony on Sunday 9 October where the overall winner will be announced. This award, which is voted for by the public, is an opportunity for audiences to celebrate their local theatre. This year over 200 theatres competed for the coveted title.
Sebastian Warrack, Executive Director of Salisbury Playhouse, said “We are delighted to have been declared the Most Welcoming Theatre in the south west region. We welcome over 100,000 people to Salisbury Playhouse each year and it is a testament to the hard work of our whole team - staff and volunteers. We will be attending the awards ceremony on 9 October to celebrate with our fellow winners and to see the overall winner announced. Thank you to everyone who voted for us and we look forward to continuing to welcome audiences from the region and further afield.
Julian Bird, Chief Executive of UK Theatre, said “Theatres play a vital role in communities across the UK, so it has been wonderful to see so many votes cast. This campaign brings together audiences, theatres, performers and producers and gives everyone the opportunity to celebrate their local venue.”
The annual UK Theatre Awards take place at London’s historic Guildhall, where the ceremony will be compered by Lesley Manville OBE.
It was recently announced that Vanessa Redgrave CBE will be receiving The Gielgud Award for Excellence in the Dramatic Arts, while Sir Ian McKellen will collect the award for Outstanding Contribution to British Theatre.
